TL;DR: On 11 May 2026 the Home Office republished the Skilled Worker caseworker guidance with three sets of corrections and clarifications: a correction to the settlement qualifying period information, clarification of transitional rules relating to the 4 April 2024 Rules changes, and clarification of Common Travel Area (CTA) policy regarding switching. The update does not introduce new policy beyond what is already set out in the Immigration Rules; it brings the operational text in line with rule changes already in force.
What changed
The GOV.UK publication page lists the 11 May 2026 update as covering three items:
- Settlement qualifying period — a correction to information used by caseworkers when assessing how time spent on the Skilled Worker route counts toward the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
- Transitional rules for the 4 April 2024 changes — clarifying how applicants who held permission under the pre-4 April 2024 Skilled Worker provisions are treated when those transitional terms apply to in-country extensions and settlement.
- CTA policy on switching — clarifying how the Common Travel Area affects switching into the Skilled Worker route.
Where this sits alongside the 8 April 2026 update
The Skilled Worker caseworker guidance was previously updated on 8 April 2026 to reflect Statement of Changes HC 1691, including text on the prison officer allowance, the B2 English language requirement for settlement (from 26 March 2027) and the visa brake for nationals of Afghanistan applying for entry clearance from outside the UK from 26 March 2026.
The 11 May 2026 update sits on top of those April changes. It does not alter the headline policy areas: prison officer transitional thresholds, the rising English language requirement and the visa brake remain as set out in HC 1691.

The document is operational guidance for Home Office caseworkers. It tells caseworkers how to consider applications to enter, remain or settle in the UK under the Skilled Worker route. The underlying Immigration Rules — Appendix Skilled Worker and related appendices — are the authoritative source; the caseworker guidance reflects current operational interpretation.
